Obituary of Dr. Yusuf (1940 – 2008)
Dr. Yusuf Omer Abdi was born in 1940 in a small place called DHEEBA near Jig-Jiga, Ethiopia. After attending Quranic School, his brother took him to the city of Harar where he joined the Haile Selassie I Boarding School. After completing the elementary school, he joined the Harar Teacher Training School. In 1959 he was assigned to be a teacher in Tigrai Region. He served in Tigrai as a teacher for three years. Then he joined Haile Slassie I University (Then UCAA) where he graduated in 1966 with a B.A. degree in History. Later he went to USA where he got his M.Sc. in Psychology from the University of Utah (1968). He was then employed by HSIU in 1968. Again he went back to USA to do his PhD. in Psychology in the University of Southern Illinois (1974). From 1968 to 2007 he served as a full time instructor and an Associate Professor in the Department Psychology in Addis Ababa University.
During his decades of service, he worked in various capacities within AAU. He was the first Director and founder of the Institute of Educational Research (12 years), former Director of Department of Education and manpower in Ethiopian Science and Technology Commission.
Dr. Yusuf is the author of numerous articles and books which are used for teaching purposes in the University. He was the former Chairman of Ethiopian Somali Democratic Movement (ESDM) (1992-94) and the founding member of Ethiopian Somali Democrat League (ESDL). He also acted as consultant for UNDP, EAL, CBE and other institutions. Dr. Yusuf was married and had four children.
